First Signs of Autumn in Fawkner Park

Today was one of those beautiful "Indian Summer" days here in Melbourne. The morning started out foggy, but then it lifted by lunchtime, and the afternoon was slightly hazy and sunny and warm. But not too hot, and the sun no longer has that summer bite to it. Autumn is my favourite time of year in Melbourne for a reason!

So I took a little photo walk in the afternoon around Fawkner Park, which is quite close to my place.

As you can see from the pictures, other than for a few fallen leaves here and there, it doesn't look very autumnal yet. It was a warm March, and in general the colours don't start showing properly here in Melbourne until May or even June, depending on the tree species and exact location. But still, the Indian Summer weather and overall vibe was very early-autumnal, and made for a very pleasant walk.

First Storm of Autumn 2017

Well, actually, the title is a little bit misleading. It isn't quite the first storm of autumn this year. There have been quite a few massive weather changes and storms over the past month or two which would have been equally spectacular - this was just the first one that I managed to capture from our new balcony, just as it was coming in!

This roll cloud is actually from a rather complex frontal/cyclonic weather system which has spawned several events like this over the past 24 hours. Some have actually been much more violent and spectacular, they just didn't happen at a convenient time for me to capture them.

Judging by the sudden gusts and drop in temperature when this came through, I think it might have been the main front and airmass change. Though some of the pre-frontal storms which came through much earlier were far more violent.

So today was the first day that I actually had to wear anything more than a t-shirt this season, so it's a bit of a turning point in the season of sorts, in my mind anyway.

Walk to St Kilda

I took a little photo walk down to St Kilda late this afternoon (from my new apartment). I hadn't really been down this end of St Kilda Road on foot much before, so I thought it would be nice to explore the area a bit.

Turns out there isn't actually very much to see along that stretch - it's mostly just office buildings and the odd apartment block or hotel here and there. As with most of the St Kilda Road district, there actually isn't much reason to just hang out here specifically. It's mostly a functional business district.

But anyway, I still managed to get a few nice photos that captured the walk. Sunset turned out to be quite spectacular in the end, and I got a few good shots of it from the balcony back home, just as I came back from the walk.
